Spatial variation in household-level risk to natural hazards across the coast of Bangladesh

People’s vulnerability, exposure and capacity are key components of a risk assessment. Index-based methodologies have proved useful to document spatial variation in risk-controlling factors. The objective this study is propose methodology derive quantitative indicators household assess household’s its variation. method applied six unions the coastal region Bangladesh, including three offshore islands. Field data collected by questionnaire survey 609 households 6 focus group discussions. Using conventional conversion aggregation methods principle component analysis (PCA), variables summarized into small set dimensions vulnerability scores. Result shows that islands generally more vulnerable natural hazards than nearby onshore unions. Unions central coast Bangladesh characterized with higher lower capacities two other parts. fatality rate cyclone SIDR at village level used validate for one surveyed union. proposed produced maps could support national local government bodies assessing identifying locations where implement specific reduction measures.
